In the early years of the Bundeswehr, the "flying banana" was one of the armed forces’ rather bizarre helicopter types. The machine with the characteristic double rotors and the shape, which is reminiscent of a banana and was therefore the inspiration for the nickname, served as a reliable workhorse for army aviators from the late 1950s to the early 1970s.
