The number of corona infections has risen to over a million worldwide. More than 53,000 people have died from the virus so far. In the USA in particular, the situation is becoming increasingly dramatic.

In the United States, the world’s highest number of deaths from the novel coronavirus was recorded within 24 hours within a country. According to data from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, 1,169 additional deaths were recorded between 8:30 p.m. Eastern Time Wednesday and the same time Thursday evening. The sad record had so far been held by Italy with 969 corona deaths on March 27.

Overall, the Johns Hopkins University counted 5926 fatalities in the United States by Thursday evening. According to forecasts by the US government, between 100,000 and 240,000 people in the US could die from the coronavirus-induced lung disease Covid-19.

More than a million infections

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide has meanwhile risen to more than a million. The number of officially reported deaths was almost 53,000. The United States leads the countries with the most infections (more than 243,000), followed by Italy, Spain, Germany (84,794) and China, according to university data.

Due to different counting methods, test options and other causes, the actual number of infections and deaths is likely to be much higher. Nevertheless, the values represent another sad milestone in the development of the pandemic, which has brought curfews for the population of entire countries and serious economic consequences.

Americans are supposed to cover their faces

The administration of US President Donald Trump was working on new recommendations for many or nearly all Americans to cover their faces when leaving their homes. As reported by the coronavirus task force of the White House, the advice should at least go to those who live in areas severely affected by the coronavirus and Covid-19. Accordingly, the government wanted to recommend non-medical mouthguards, T-shirts or bandanas to cover the nose and mouth – for example when shopping in the supermarket or in the pharmacy.

In the hard-hit state of New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo warned that ventilators will probably run out in six days. This can only be prevented if demand subsides. The state had recently distributed only 400 ventilators in New York City and another 200 in the suburbs. Across the state, more than 92,500 residents have tested positive for the new coronavirus.
